Marking the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II, this exhibition presents the work of Chimei Hamada (1917–2018) — an artist who experienced the battlefield firsthand and transformed the absurdity, tragedy, and irony of war into profound expressions through copper prints and sculpture.

The exhibition features 15 copper prints and 5 sculptures, centering on his renowned series

“Elegy for the New Conscript.” These works, imbued with humor and compassion, reflect Hamada’s deep love of humanity.

Hamada’s art has been celebrated both in Japan and internationally, with solo exhibitions held at major institutions such as the Neue Galerie Graz (Austria), Albertina Museum (Vienna), The British Museum (London), Uffizi Gallery (Florence), as well as leading museums throughout Japan.

Today, war exists beyond the lived experience of many, yet conflicts persist across the world, and we remain touched by their consequences. Through his sharp wit and profound humanism, Hamada invites us to confront both the folly and dignity of humankind, urging reflection on peace in an age that has yet to outgrow conflict. We hope this exhibition allows visitors to engage with the artist’s enduring wish for peace and his unwavering regard for the human spirit.

Chimei Hamada – Artist Details

本年、第二次世界大戦の終結から八十年を迎えました。

本展では、戦地での体験をもとに、銅版画と彫刻によって戦争の悲劇や人間の愚かさを鋭く風刺したアーティスト、浜田知明（1917‒2018）の作品を紹介します。

銅版画15点と彫刻5点による構成で、代表作〈初年兵哀歌（Elegy for the New Conscript）〉シリーズを中心に、ユーモアを交えながら人間への深い愛情を描いた作品も展示いたします。

浜田知明の作品は、オーストリア・グラーツ州立近代美術館、ウィーンのアルベルティーナ国立美術館、ロンドンの大英博物館、フィレンツェのウフィツィ美術館など世界を代表する美術館に加え、日本国内の主要美術館でも個展が開催され、その芸術性が高く評価されてきました。

今日、多くの人々にとって戦争は経験の外にありますが、世界ではいまも紛争が続き、私たちはなお、その影響の中に生きています。

風刺と人間愛を併せ持つ浜田知明の表現は、戦争を知らない世代にも人間の本質を問いかけ、平和の意味を改めて見つめ直す機会となることを願っています。

本展を通じて、アーティストの平和への願いと人間へのまなざしに触れていただければ幸いです。
