A large-scale retrospective of Chimei Hamada, One of the leading printmakers in Japan, was held at The Museum of Modern Art, Hayama from July 10th [sat]. The exhibition was titled“The World of HAMADA Chimei -Elegy and Humor in Prints and Sculpture-“.

Chimei Hamada, born in Kumamoto, became 93 years old in 2010. But his drive shows no sign of slowing down and new works including sculptures were presented in this exhibition.

Chimei Hamada got worldwide recognition by the Elegy for a New Conscript series, in which his painful memory in the war is sublimated into art. His solo exhibitions were held at the globally important museums such as the Albertina, Vienna in 1979, the Japan Gallery of The British Museum, London in 1993 and the Uffizi Gallery, Florence in 2008.

No print has been made since 2000, but now he has brought out high-quality sculptures made from 1983.

Chimei Hamada's works range from the ones that confess and accuse the vivid suffering he experienced in the war to the pieces that satirize modern society's serious problems humorously. Their wide-ranging expression is a characteristic of his works. We can find the attitude as a judge who exposes the evil and strict but warm human eyes that look at humanity as imperfect in his works.

日本を代表する版画家の一人、浜田知明の大規模な回顧展「版画と彫刻による哀しみとユーモア 浜田知明の世界展」が神奈川県立近代美術館･葉山館にて開催されました。

熊本県出身の浜田知明は、2010年で93歳。しかしその創作意欲は衰えを知らず、今回の展覧会においても彫刻作品をはじめとした新作が発表されました。

浜田知明は、戦争によって刻まれた苛烈な記憶を芸術の域に昇華させた版画作品「初年兵哀歌」シリーズで世界的な評価を獲得しました。1979年にはウィーンのアルベルティーナ美術館、1993年にはロンドンの大英博物館日本ギャラリー、2008年にはフィレンツェのウフィツィ美術館など、世界的に見ても重要な多くの美術館で個展が開催されています。

2000年を最後に版画の制作はされておらず、現在は1983年より制作されるようになった彫刻作品において充実した作品を発表しています。

浜田知明の作品は、戦争で自らが経験した生々しい苦悩を告白、告発する作品から、現代社会の深刻な問題をユーモラスに風刺する作品まで、その幅広い表現を特徴としています。そこには単に悪を暴き出す審問官的態度だけではなく、不完全な存在としての人間をありのままに見つめる、厳しさとあたたかさの同居する一人の人間の視線が感じられます。

展覧会は7/10(土)～9/5(日)まで開催されました。御来場誠にありがとうございました。
