The maquette of the statue of Matteo Ricci, the monument Cecco Bonanotte is at work on, was presented to the Pope May 30th, 2010.

Matteo Ricci was a Christian missionary to China, as Francisco de Xavier to Japan. He brought in not only Christianity but also a world map that hadn’t existed in China until then, and it made a major impact on the perspective of the world of Chinese people. The map was also imported to Japan that was in the period of national isolation, and gave Japanese people a shock too. It was also the first and memorable world map for Japan.

In celebration of the 400th anniversary of his death, Cecco Bonanotte is producing a monument that is 3.5 meters high and 7 meters wide. It is going to be installed in Macerata in Italy, the hometown of Matteo Ricci, and in Beijing where he passed away.

2010年5月30日に、チェッコ・ボナノッテが制作中のモニュメント、マテオ･リッチ像のマケットが法王に贈呈されました。

マテオ･リッチは中国にキリスト教を伝道した宣教師で、日本におけるフランシスコ･ザビエルのような存在にあたります。キリスト教のみならず、それまで中国に存在しなかった世界地図をももたらし、中国人の世界観、文化観を大きく揺さぶりました。この地図は後に鎖国中の日本にも輸入され、日本人にも大きな衝撃を与えました。日本においても初めてもたらされた、記念すべき世界地図です。

その没後４００年を記念し、高さ3.5m、幅７mのモニュメントがチェッコ･ボナノッテにより制作されています。その像はマテオ･リッチの故郷、イタリアのマチェラータと、彼が逝去した北京に設置される予定です。
